SIX MARRIAGES
MAN CHARGED WITH BIGAMY PA AUCKLAND, This Day. Joseph James Groonotte, hairdresser, 57. appeared before Mr. J. Morling, S M., charged with committing bigamy by going through a form of marriage with a young woman at Mangere on October' 17, 1941, having previously been married in Johannesburg, South Africa, on November 24, 1913. Senior-Detective Trethewey said that when he was interviewed at Taumarunui concerning the alleged bigamous marriage the accused made a written explanation under the name of William McDonald, as he was then known. In this statement the accused said he left'school at 14 and went to sea on ships trading to South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. While in Johannesburg in November, 1913, he married a woman older than himself. He was under the influence of drugs at the time, and not long after the marriage he went to England. He had never maintained his wife. "I have since gone through forms of marriage with five other women, four of them in New Zealand and one in England." continvied the statement. The accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was refused.
