AWARDS FOR COURAGE

PUBLIC INVESTITURE HELD

The courage and distinguished service of members of the New Zealand Forces were officially recognised at a public investiture held in the Wellington Town Hall last night by the Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall), who presented honours and decorations earned in theatres of war all over the world. There was a large crowd present, and proceedings were carried out with that precise formality typical of the occasion. As each recipient moved forward to receive his honour he was given an ovation. The recipients were received by his Excellency and Lady ' Newall. ' With them on the stage were Major H. A. Jaffray, military secretary, who read thj citations for each award; Captain M. Taylor, second member of the Naval Board, Brigadier A. E. Conway, Colonel L. W. Andrew, Air -Commodore R. B. Bannerman, honorary <aides-de-camp; Colonel A. A. Tennent, honorary surgeon, and Wing Commander G. H. Forrest, honorary physician. , The ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) and the Mayor (Mr. Appleton). Two senior members of the Army Nursing Service were the first to step forward for their awards, and they were given a great reception, as were two Maoris who also received decorations.
