TWO MEN CHARGED

Two men from Waitara, who recently paid a visit to Wellington by car, found when returning- home at the weekend that they were short of petrol. One of them, according to Sub-Inspector J. Abel in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, thereupon entered a milking shed and stole a length of rubber hose. The other, when they came upon a car parked alongside the road, approached it with the intention of siphoning out some petrol. "But the owner was sitting in the back seat. He called out, and they went away," Mr. Abel added. The two accused pleaded guilty to the charges, lan Carr Douglas, motor driver, 39, of the theft of a length of rubber hose, and Trevor Maurice Smith, apprentice carpenter, 20, of attempting to steal four gallons of benzine. On their behalf, Mr. A. J. Mazengarb. said that it was in their favour that after running away they returned voluntarily to the owner of the car from which they had attempted to siphon the petrol and had made a "clean breast" of the matter. In the meantime, however, the owner had communicated with the police. Douglas was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within two years if called upon, and Smith was [ admitted to probation for 12 months. Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., was on the Bench.
