AUSTRALIAN STEPS FOR PUNISHMENT

Rec. 1 p.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 1. "The Government takes the view that the sternest justice must be meted out to the Japanese criminals responsible for outrages against prisoners of war and internees, whoever they are and whatever rank they hold," said the Minister of External Affairs, Dr. Evatt. The War Crinies Commission of Australia would inquire into reports of ill* treatment of Australian prisoners. Two additional Judges, Mr. Justice Mansfield and Judge Kirby. had been appointed to assist Mr. Justice Webb. Judge Kirby had already left to begin inquiries in surrendered areas. "We are not going to let these Japanese criminals get away with anything." added Dr. Evatt.
