MACARTHUR ELATED

ARRIVAL AT ATSUGI

NEW YORK, August 30. When General Mac Arthur landed at Atsugi airfield he was obviously elated at the appearance of his troops on Tokio's best aerodrome, an Associated Press correspondent says. After saying to General Eichelberger, "Hello, Bob," General MacArthur hailed another general with "Hello, you old rapscallion." When a Japanese news photographer stepped out in front of other photographers, who called out that he was in their way, General Mac Arthur grinned and drawled: "You'll have to make him capitulate." Shortly before General Mac Arthur's plane arrived the Japanese Lieuten-ant-General Arisue, former commander of Atsugi airfield, called at the aerodrome with four members of his staff and an interpreter. Arisue was given to understand that he could present himself later at General MacArthur's hotel. Rather pointedly he was not asked by General Eichelberger to remain for General MacArthur's arrival, though Arisue will now head the liaison committee for the surrender.
