ARRIVING SOON
AUSTRALIAN POTATOES
"The importation of two shipments of potatoes from Australia is now proceeding," said* the Minister of Marketing (Mr. Roberts) last evening. "Arrangements for shipment were made over a month ago, but considerable delay has been experienced by the overseas vessels concerned in maintaining the schedule of loading and arrival dates originally fixed. It is expected that a shipment of approximately 3500 tons will arrive in Wellington within 10 days or a fortnight, and approximately 7000 tons in Auckland within a few days of the Wellington shipment. "The potatoes will all come from Tasmania, and although they are midseason varieties and arriving later than intended, they are of excellent quality and should meet a ready demand from consumers. Tasmania has had a record area planted and a very good production year. Thousands of tons of Tasmanian potatoes have been supplied to American forces in the South-west Pacific area, and are arriving at their destination in excellent condition. Further advice of distribution in New Zealand will be given on arrival of the shipments. "In the meantime," concluded the Minister, "improved weather has enabled digging to take place in the South' Island, and supplies are much better than they were during the three or four months of exceptionally heavy rain, floods, and snow."
