OFFER OF LOAN
NOT FAVOURED IN BRITAIN
LONDON, August 25. The proposal of the head of the United States Foreign Economic Administration, Mr. Leo Crowley, that Britain should borrow money m order to pay for goods supplied byAmmca has found no favour in Whitehall, which feels that it would be a grave error to accumulate a war debt, says the "Sunday Express" diplomatic correspondent. It is considered that even if this means a further period ol stringent austerity, it must be faced. There was no cause for bitterness over the sudden cessation of lend-lease, said the vice-chairman of the Nuffield. Organisation, Sir Miles Thomas, in a speech. It had to end some time. "We must regard the cessation ol lend-lease," he said, "as a challenge to the industry of our workers, to-the perspicacity of our commercial leaders, and to the wisdom of our newlyappointed political head."
