THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL
PEOPLE'S WARM WELCOME
, The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, returned to Wellington on Saturday from a visit to Fiji, Western Samoa, and Penrhyn. His Excellency was accompanied by Lady Newall, Major H. A. Jaffray (Military Secretay), and Mrs. Jaffray, Captain the Hon. D. E. A. Winn, A.D.C., and Miss N. Walton. The Governor-General travelled by R.N.Z.A.F. aircraft to Suva, Avhere the party were the guests of the Governor of Fiji (Sir A. Grantham) and Lady Grantham. During his stay in Fiji, his Excellency A'isited personnel of the Royal New Zealand Navy and units of the Fiji Defence Force and the Royal New Zealand Air Force, where he spoke individually to a large number of officers and other ranks. The Governor-General, attended by Major Jaffray, then flew to Western Samoa. Avhere he was the guest of the Administrator (Mr. A. C. Turnbull). A full day was spent here, during which his Excellency attended a large fathering of school children at Malifa chool, visited the hospital at Apia, and was welcomed at a King's kava ceremony at Mulinu'u, followed by the presentation of gifts and entertainment. This was a most spectacular ceremony. During the evening his Excellency attended a European reception and ball, where he met a great number of the people. The next day his Excellency neAv to Penrhyn, Avhere he spent one night as the guest of the Resident Agent (Capt. Gladney). Here he walked around the village, visiting the hospital and school, and Avas given a great welcome by the population. The whole trip Avas carried out by R.N.Z.A.F. aircraft.
