MAIZE PRODUCTION
INCREASE IN SUBSIDY A Government , decision to an increase of sixpence a bushel in the subsidy to be paid for the 1946 season on maize marketed through the maize marketing committee was announced last night by the Minister of Marketing (Mr. Roberts). "Maize growers' costs have increased during the past year," said Mr. Roberts, "and to meet these increases and to encourage maize growers to do ! their utmost to plan an increased area in maize this spring, it has been decided to increase the subsidy, making the total subsidy payable next year Is 6d a bushel or a price to growers ranging from 7s a bushel in July up to 7s 8d a bushel in March. "With this substantial subsidy and the active co-operation of maize growers in all producing areas, particularly in the P6verty Bay and Bay of Plenty districts, it is hoped that an area will be planted this season sufficient to meet all our maize requirements. In view of the world-wide shortage of all feeding stuffs it is desirable that every possible effort should be made Iby growers and merchants to achieve the maize target of 12,000 acres."
