TREMENDOUS BLITZ
FINAL OFFENSIVE
HUGE BOMB TONNAGE DROPPED
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.) Rec. 10.30 a.m. GUAM, August 14. More than 1000 planes, including: 800 Super-Fortresses, have operated against Japan in the last 34 hours. Super-Fortresses dropped approximately 6000 tons of demolition and incendiary bombs on military targets, including the army arsenal at Osaka. Another message says that the planes carried out daylight attacks. The targets included Hikabi arsenal, the railway yards near Hiroshima (the scene of the first atomic bomb attack), an oil refinery, and industrial areas. Some of the targets were in the Tokio region. A military spokesman in Washington forecast still heavier attacks if the Japanese delayed their surrender. Meanwhile, big leaflet raids were made. In the past week more than 15,000,000 leaflets were dropped on the Japanese Empire, the last batch by Super-Fortresses yesterday. They told the Japanese about the peace negotiations, about the atomic bombing, and about Russia's entry into the war.
