AIRBORNE ASSAULT
CAGAYAN OPERATION
LONDON, June 24.
General Mac Arthur has launched a new drive against the Japanese trapped in the Cagayan Valley in northern Luzon. ,On Thursday morning American paratroops and glider-borne troops were dropped near Aparri, the port at the mouth of the Cagayan River, which is already held by American troops and Filipino guerrillas. The airborne troops, veterans of the United States 11th Airborne Division, took howitzers and jeeps with them for a rapid push against the Japanese. They have joined up with guerrillas moving up the east bank of the CagjSyan River, and were last reported 41 miles south of Aparri. Less than 50 miles up the valley other American forces are driving to the-rescue of guerrillas who are holding an important objective. They have gained nine miles, and are within eight miles of the besieged guerrillas. General Mac Arthur also reports good progress in other sectors in northern Luzon, and says that Japanese are . being "killed in hundreds each day in the closing operations of the cam-
palgn.
