CAGAYAN VALLEY DRIVE

Rec. 9 a.m. WASHINGTON, June 23. The 37th Division, driving rapidly northward along the Cagayan Valley road in northern Luzon, has advanced 11 miles and is within 20 miles of our Philippine guerrilla forces at Tuguegarao, says General Mac Arthur's communique. On Mindanao, our forces destroyed enemy cave and pill-box defences, further reducing the scattered enemy remnants. Fighter-bombers attacked Formosa. Patrols bombed oil storage facilities in Nanking, waterfront areas at Canton, and shipping at Hong Kong and Swatow, and also attacked island outposts in the South China Sea. On Tarakan the capture by Australian forces of the remaining enemy positions at Billa, near Djoeha, ended all organised resistance. In the Brunei Bay area, Australian troops moving down the coast reached Seria.
