FRENCH CLAIMS
CAUSE OF DELAY lAI WEST
LONDON, June 6.
French claims to Cologne and Frankfurt are reported to be delaying the final settlement of the occupation zones in western Germany, says the Washington correspondent of the United Press of America. The Americans want Frankfurt as a communications outlet and entry for American troops. The United States is maintaining its hold; on Frankfurt for the time being by retaining SHAEF there. The British want Cologne in their zone, contending that French occupation would impair Belgium's independence, because the French would be interposed between German and Belgian territory General de Gaulle argues that Cologne is essential for the future security of France.
There are also differences concerning the Ruhr Valley.
The French Ist Army in Bavaria has dismissed 23 German officials previously appointed by the Allied military government. This is reported by the military government in Bavaria. The French removed the officials because of inefficiency or Nazi affiliations
