THE DEATH PENALTY

REINTRODUCED IN DENMARK

LONDON, June 2. King Christian of Denmark signed a new penal law yesterday reintroducing the death penalty. This is designed to apply primarily to traitors who worked for the Germans during the occupation. The death penalty was abolished in Denmark in 1895. The police of the Danish resistance movement, on the Kecommendation of SHAEF, have arrested the German consulate staff in Denmark. The staff numbers 100 persons. The German commander-in-chief in Denmark, General Lindemann, who is wanted for war crimes, was arrested yesterday, says the Exchange Telegraph agency's Copenhagen correspondent. The former German radio commissioner, Dr. Lohmann, is being held for questioning. In some quarters he is credited with playing a double role: he is said to have been attached to the Allied secret service and to have helped to alleviate Denmark's hardships.
