ARMY DETENTION
PRISONERS ILL-TREATED
CANBERRA, June 1
A wide inquiry is to be held soon into the Australian Army detention system and the disciplining and treatment of men undergoing detention. Announcing this, the Army Minister, Senator Fraser, said that the report by Mr. Justice Reed on Brisbane's Grovely detention barracks, tabled today in the House of Representatives, "tended to foster some disquiet." This report, dealing with allegations against the barrack's Staff of punching, kicking, pushing, and other ill treatment, states: "It would be flying in the face of all probability to hold that there was never any ill treatment by the staff." Nevertheless, the Minister warned that within the Army's ranks there were men who were amenable neither to discipline nor authority, and there should be no misplaced sympathy in the public mind towards these men. Mr. Justice Reed conducted the recent inquiry which resulted in the release of Private John Wilson and two others who were serving long-term prison sentences for a mutiny at Grovely.
