TERRORIST REGIME
ARGENTINE GOVERNMENT
NEW YORK, May 31
"The Government of Argentina no sooner had declared war on Germany and Japan and signed the Act of: ChapuJtepec than it deprived the Argentine people of what, small remains of freedom they possessed, using the pretext that anyone who disapproves In wartime is a traitor." says the Buenos Aires correspondent of the "New York Times." "The Government embarked on a campaign of intimidation by wholesale arrests of prominent citizens, and reestablished the political censorship in a vain attempt to prevent the news reaching the outside world. This week the censorship mangled dispatches to the 'New York Times' dealing with the speech to UNCIO by the American Secretary of State, Mr. E. R. Stettinius. Experience had shown that there is no hope of getting the truth past the Argentine censorship, and therefore this dispatch is being sent via other channels. "Things have happened in Buenos Aires recently exceeding anything this correspondent remembers during 17 years* experience in Fascist Italy. He has seen whole sections of Buenos Aires occupied by the army in full war kit, peaceful citizens searched in the streets, and policemen directing tvatfic with revolvers in their hands. "All the gaols throughout the nation are filled to overflowing- In May alone eight newspapers were closed down, and seven editors were arrested. "Until the Argentine people are given the opportunity to elect thenGovernment relations with the United [States will never be cordial."
