SMOKE VEILS TARGETS
NEW YORK, May, 25.
The United States 21st Bomber Command announced that the Shinagawa waterfront district was obscured .by smoke for at least 12 hours after Thursday morning's Super-Fortress attack on Tokio. Shinagawa contains marshalling yards through which passes onethird of Japan's rail traffic.
Tokio radio has reported serious transportation difficulties, including the. suspension of the ShinagawaTsurimi line and additional metropolitan street cars. Captain Thomas Clarke described the raid as the toughest of his 24 missions.
Sergeant Robert Demeritt said the flak was terrific. "We saw three SuperFortresses go down nearby and another on the way out." he said. A correspondent, on Guam reports that five members of the crew of a damaged Super-Fortress baled out over Tokio when the plane was out of control, but the pilot righted the bomber and flew safely to Iwo Jima.
