SUPPLIES FOR NORWAY
OCCUPATION PROCEEDING SMOOTHLY
Rec. 1.40 p.m. OSLO, May 23. Twelve Allied ships carrying 25,000 tons of basic supplies, 85 per cent, of which consists of food, are now on their way to Norway, stated the chief of the SHAEF civil affairs unit, Brigadier Hansen. The bulk of these supplies are from Britain, but others will come later direct from America.
American troops will be arriving shortly to occupy Oslo, which is within the American zone.
The Allied occupation of Norway is proceeding surprisingly smoothly, with no serious disturbances and practically no looting. The Germans are enforcing their own discipline satisfactorily. Eighty thousand displaced persons, including 74,000 Russians, will be repatriated as soon as conditions permit.
