AVIATION FUEL
BRITISH INVENTIONS
Rec 11 a.m. RUGBY, May 23. In addition to iso octane, the details of which have just been made public two other new materials, both made in England, contributed vitally to the new super fuel. One is named victane, the raw material for which is benzol from British coke ovens, and which improves the performances of engines at high power outputs even more than iso octane. The other was more recently developed and is a still -more • valuable component of aviation fuel. In turn, it outshadows victane. . Pre-war plans included plants which could turn out sufficient of all the essential ingredients for aviation spirit, and thus the new factories which have made tetra-ethyl lead and other chemicals used in conjunction with the latter have been erected and operated in Britain with complete success. Each year one of them extracts from the sea thousands of tons of bromide where it is present in minute concentrations.— 8.0. W.
