TOWARDS EMPIRE
AGREED POLICY URGED
Rec. 11.30 a.m.
LONDON, May 23,
In a letter to "The Times," Lord Bledisloe says that there appears to be a consensus of authoritative opinion that for the future peace of the world and the influence of Britain in securing it, a foreign policy must be agreed among the parties and be continuous in its execution.
"May I, on the eve of Empire Day, earnestly appeal that our policy in regard to the British Commonwealth should be similarly agreed, and continuous in application, if only to ensure its integrity and its present [save for Eire] solidarity to which the Allies' European victory is so largely attributable?" the letter says. "Full consideration of the claims of the Dominions and colonies is a worthy objective of all parties, but more important is the dissemination of knowledge, especially through our schools and universities, about overseas British territories, and above all, about hopes and ideals regarding which the policy of all parties hitherto has shown scope for considerable improvement."
