VAST MOVEMENT
? HORDE OF GERMANS
.MARCH TO SEGREGATION . AREAS' (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) Kec. l.io p.m. LONDON, May 20. This weekend has seen the begin- ." ning of the final vast movement of the surrendered German forces within the British occupied zone, says a correspondent of "The Times" in northwest Germany. About two million, stripped of all arms and war equip- •: ment (except: for1, officers' personal ■■I weapons), are being marched to concentration areas-<-;ifi north Germany, ■ where they will await disbandment. Most of the' men are going to the ': Schleswig-Holstein isthmus, where : about 1,000,000 will "be confined on the west coast. SS troops and fanatical parachutists will be segregated on the rocky, windswept island of Nordstrand, and 500,000 others on the east side, and more than 350,000 are bound for the peninsula between the estuaries of the Elbe and the Weser, while 120,000 from Holland are bound for the peninsula between the estuaries of the Ems and the .Weser. Apart from the marching multitudes, 500,000 men lying wounded or sick in German hospitals will follow their fit comrades'when; they .are able to do so. "Weapons and equipment which the '/Capitulating troop's have been dumping - and stacking under • British supervision will be mainly destroyed, though probably certain Allied countries will first take what they want to make up deficiencies in the equipment of their own armies.
