BACK IN FOOCHOW

FORCES OF CHINESE WASHINGTON, May 20. Chinese forces have captured Foochow. The enemy remnants are fleeing north-eastward. A correspondent of the Associated Press says it is persistently reported that the Japanese are preparing to evacuate several pockets along the China coast between Hangchqw Bay and Hong Kong, all of which might become death-traps if sizeable American forces landed at nearby points. Thesa places include Swatow, Amoy, Foochow, and possibly Wenchow. Though independent reports suggest that Foochow was occupied virtually without bloodshed, a Chinese High Command communique reports that the Chinese received reinforcements on. Wednesday and launched an attack on Thursday morning and by evening had broken into the town, completing the occupation by 5 a.m. on Friday. Sources apart from the High Command estimated that the Japanese had in the city about 1000 troops which were pursued eastward for nine miles along the north bank of the Mm River to the outskirts of the small estuary port of Mamoi. The Japanese are reported to be already withdrawing from the entire coastal region and taking off in small ships for Shanghai. . I i
