NO FRIENDLINESS
SURRENDER CEREMONY
BRIEF AND FORMAL (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.) Rec. 1.30 p.m. LONDON, May 2. The whole ceremony in which the Germans signed the instrument of unconditional surrender in Italy took just over 17 minutes, although the negotiations preceding it had lasted more than months, says Reuters correspondent at Allied Headquarters in Italy. There was no hint of friendliness, throughotit the ceremony. General Morgan, after signing the documents, handed over copies to the Germans, and said in the same stern voice as he had used throughout the interview, "Thank you. I ask you to withdraw now." The German officers bowed slightly and left with escorting officers. - , (T . General Morgan told pressmen: If the terms we have just signed are obeyed we shall be practically in Berchtesgaden." Correspondents leaving .after the ceremony caught a glimpse of FieldMarshal Alexander chatting gaily with two Red Army officers.
