KILLED ON SERVICE

FLIGHT SERGEANT GLEDHILL

Flight Sergeant A. W. C. Gleahill, who was recently killed while on active service, was born in Takaka, Nelson, in November, 1923. He went to Petqne when two years old and received .his primary education at the Petone Central School, where he played Rugby and cricket. For his secondary education, he attended the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, Petone, where he played cricket in the Ist XI and Rugby in the Ist XV. Scholastically he did very good work, especially in bookkeeping, in which he passed the Stage I Accountancy Examination. On leaving school, he joined

the firm of Colgate-Palmolive, where he was held in very high esteem. He was always interested in the work Of the St. John Ambulance, and joined as a cadet, working his way up to cadet officer. Just a few days before he. left for overseas he was presented with the King's Badge—the Grand Prior's Badge. He was also a member of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows. On his 18th birthday he enlisted in the R.N.Z.A.F., and after doing preliminary training in New Zealand, went to Canada where he gained his wings. On arriving in England he was posted to the R.A.F., and it was as a member of the 691 st Squadron that he was sent on the mission which resulted in his death on March 2.
