DECISION STANDS
WATERLOO FIRE STATION
The Lower Hutt Fire Board has informed those who objected to the fire station, site, in Waterloo Road'that after considering all the factors it had decided to adhere to its previous resolution.
In a long statement, the chairman of the board, Mr. F. S. Hewer, gives the reasons for the board's choice. There were only four eas*-west ways over the railway line, and it was essential that the station should be on one of these, and Waterloo Road was the most central.
The statement gives reasons for the board's objection to the other sites which had been proposed, and quoted Mr. Girling Butcher's opinion that the passing of schools was not as objectionable as transit along High Street, the business area, would be.
In regard to the objection that the area chosen - was excessive Mr. But-cher-was again quoted as advising the selection of a site of at least two acres.
In regard to the dispossessing of a widow's family home, Mr. Hewer said that it might be a considerable time before the board required that property, and it might be possible to build without disturbing the tenancy. The board would deal sympathetically with the tenant.
