TROOPER ROY DIEDERICH
The name of Trooper Edward Roy Patriok Diederich, son oi Mr. B. J. Diederich, of Palmercton North, and the late Mrs. Diederich, appeared in a casualty list published latt week as "killed in action." This brought to a close the career of one of the most outstanding "men of Victoria University College in the late twenties and early thirties.
Trooper Diederich entered Varsity in 1925 and was capped LL.B. in 1930. He took part in all student activities and was president of the Students' Association in 1932. He played Rugby
football in the Varsity XV from 1925 until 1933, then he played for and at times captained the provincial representatives, and also captained the "N.Z. University XV and toured in Australia with that team. In all .he played in 40 first-class representative matches and orfe second-class. He joined the staff of the Public Trust Office in. 1025.. and m -1938
left New Zealand to take up the position of .Assistant AttorneyGeneral to Fiji, and later while there became a Magistrate He returned to New Zealand in 1944 and at the conclusion of his leave went overseas with the forces.
Last Saturday all teams of the Victoria University Club played in white arm bands in respect to his memory, and a contemporary remarked at Wakefield Park: "He had everything— ability, charm, and thoughtfulness, and be was a ereat fellow."
