WAGE INCREASES GRANTED

Wage increases of up to lis a week have been granted by the Court of Arbitration to the New Zealand (except Otago and Southland) Brewers'. Bottlers', Bottle-washers', and Aerated Water Employees' Union. The President of the Court, Mr. Justice Tyndall, said in a memorandum that in making the award the Court had taken into consideration an application made under the Economic Stabilisation Emergency Regulations, 1942, by the union for amendment of the existing award. Wages had accordingly been made payable retrospectively to April l.

The minimum rates of pay for male workers over the age of 21 were increased by 10s a week, -junior females received increases of from 4s 6d to 9s 6d, adult females were given an increase of lis, and youths received increases of from 5s to 7s 6d..The hourly rate for casual workers was raised from 2s 6d to 2s 9d, and meal money was increased to 2s. A new provision inserted was that workers should' be allowed a break of 10 minutes each morning and afternoon, provided there was not a complete cessation of the work of the factory.
