TROOPER L. MAHONY
Trooper Laurence Mahony, who was killed on. active service in Italy recently, was on the staff of the district office of the Department of Agriculture prior to entering the Army. He had an outstanding record as a sportsman. Educated at Brigidine, Convent School, Johnsonville, and St. Patrick's College, Wellington, he was a member of the college first XV and field sports champion. He was also a noted amateur" wrestler, being run-ner-up in the junior championship on two occasions. He was also an outstanding amateur boxer. He was a member of the Kilbirnie Gymnasium indoor basketball team, an.l of St. Peter and St. Paul tennis club, Johnsonville. He was one of the best forwards in the Featherston Army football team during the 1944 season. On the day he was killed his brother, Brian, also a trooper with the 2nd N.Z.E.F., was wounded. Only 21 years of age, Trooper Larry Mabhony was the son' of a soldier of the last war who was wounded at the second Somme battle.
