A SPECIAL TASK

Assurances given by the Prime ■ Minister of the special measures being . taken in London to care for New ' Zealand prisoners of war who have • now been liberated from German '■ camps will be a source of comfort to • next-of-kin in New Zealand. It is particularly gratifying to know that in 1 the majority of cases the men have 1 stood up well to their experiences and ■ that those who have been less for- ' tunate are being well looked after in ' hospitals and recreation centres.- The public, too, will welcome the renewed ■ pledge toy Mr. Fraser that the Govern- ' ment will not consider the country's war effort complete until all men and ■ women have been adequately resettled 'in homes and employment, and the 1 emphasis he has placed on the particu- ■ lar significance of the pledge to men who have been prisoners of war. The lot of a prisoner of war under the : best of conditions makes demands ' upon moral stamina which New Zealanders have displayed in admir- ■ able measure. Mr. Fraser _ said in Montreal that there was increasing evidence that the steady moral and physical breakdown of Germany was. multiplying the demands made on the endurance and stamina of our men in enemy hands. This statement emphasises the appropriateness of the pledge Mr. Fraser has given and the duty of all to do everything possible to ensure that it is carried out to the full.
