i P.A. . DUNEDIN, April 17. A-nine-year licensing referendum to replace the present system of a poll every three years was advanced by! Mr. A. P. Greenfield, president, at a meeting of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce tonight, as a possible means of encouraging hotel proprietors and licencees to face expenditure necessary for the improvement of residential accommodation in their houses. The idea found less than general acceptance owing to diversity of opinion as to the cause of lack of first-class accommodation. High rents, short leases, and the desire only to sell liquor were some of the factors quoted as being the cause of the situation.
