AVOIDANCE OF INFLATION

The subject of the payment of gratuities to New Zealand personnel was touched on briefly by the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) when he was speaking to the conference of delegates representing national savings cpmmittees in Wellington yesterday. Referring to some of the tasks lying ahead, Mi\ Nash mentioned the ques<tion of rehabilitation, which, he said, would not be an easy job. Then there was the question of gratuities. There would be a lot of,argument about that —how to pay, arid how to avoid the inflationary period that came in 1920 after the last war. There had been more disaster at that point than.there was during the war years. He asked them to imagine what the position would be if, with 170,000 men eligible for gratuities,- they were all paid out and came along at once to buy goods that were not there. The result would be the position, that developed in 1920 all over, again. ■ ;.
