CANADIAN DRAFTEES

THE NUMBERS OVERSEAS

OTTAWA, April 6. Mr. Douglas Abbott, Parliamentary assistant to the Defence Minister, disclosed in the House of Commons that of slightly more than 14,500 home defence troops warned for overseas service since last November 7069 went "absent without leave," of whom 2978 were rounded up. A total of 14,236 home defence troops, of whom 2400 volunteered, were sent overseas by March 31. There were 75 per cent, more fullytrained infantry reinforcements overseas than was secretly forecast last November, when authority was given to send draftees abroad. Of 60.000 home defence troops last November, 10,279 had volunteered for service overseas.
