HOUSES FOR MAORIS
GRANTING OF LOANS
A special provision enabling Maoris to obtain loans to build houses was referred to today by the Native Minister (Mr. Mason).
The Minister said that the Native Department included among its activities the provision of houses for the Maori people. That work was carried on under statutory authority, the Native Housing Act, of 1935, and the amending Act of 1938 authorising the making of loans to Maoris in appropriate cases.
Any Maori desirous of improving his living conditions by obtaining a new house was required to make application in writing to the Registrar of the Native Land Court for the district in which his land was situated or .in which he lived.
"Already a considerable number of Maoris have, availed themselves of this beneficial provision," said the Minister. "At the meeting of the Board of Native Affairs on February 22 applications from 73 Maoris for loans for the erection of houses, totalling £30,131, were approved."
