TRIAL OF ADMIRAL

DEFENCE BY MUSELIER

PARIS, March 14,

Vice-Admiral Muselier, former Commander-in-Chief of the Free French Navy, intervened dramatically in the trial of Admiral. Jean Esteva, striding suddenly into the drowsy court-room. He demanded to give evidence on behalf of the prisoner, and permission was granted after hurried consultations between court officials.

Admiral Muselier declared in a tense voice: "Darlan was mainly to blame for what occurred in Tunisia." Admiral Muselier claimed that Darlan put men such as Esteva into posts for which they were not fitted. Esteva did his duty till the armistice, when Darlan assumed control. "After that it _was difficult to know where duty lay," he said.

Other witnesses • declared that Esteva never allowed the German propaganda magazine "Signal" to get a hold in Tunisia, and strenuously denied that he was a traitor. They said that Esteva acted with the best intentions during the Allied landings in North Africa.
