CARGO PILLAGING

AUSTRALIAN FIGHTING FUND Rec. 9'a.m. CANBERRA, March 14. The Government has set aside £200,000 to combat cargo pillaging, said Mr. Beasley in the House of Representatives on behalf of the Minister of Shipping. The issue, he said, was not confined to pillaging on the waterfront; the Government believed the operations were on a much higher plane than among waterside workers. It was believed that goods were pillaged long before they reached the ships' side, and the Government was determined to root it out.

Mr. Beasley was replying to Mr. Anthony (Country Party), who referred to a report by Brigadier Pascoe from Lac that of 2000, cases of beer which were sent to troops at Christmas more than 400 cases had been pillaged in Sydney.
