U.S. MEAT SHIPMENTS
ELIMINATION PROPOSED
WASHINGTON, March 13. Because the total demands are considerably greater than the supply available, the War Food Administrator, Mr. Marvin Jones, has proposed to eliminate meat shipments to Britain and liberated areas and also to reduce military supplies in order to avoid aggravating civilian shortages.
The Associated Press of America says this move has precipitated a bitter inter-departmental controversy which President Roosevelt may be called on to settle because of its possible impact upon international relations and upon home front psychology. With food production now on the down grade, supplies of meats, fats, vegetable oils, sugar, and dairy products are inadequate to meet demands.
There are fears that curtailment may have far-reaching repercussions in London and other foreign capitals and weaken America's influence at the San Francisco conference. On the other hand, Mr. Jones believes it is impossible further to reduce civilian supplies without endangering domestic morale and disrupting the food rationing programmes.
