ON EASTERN SIDE

MARINE MOVE ON IWO JIMA

NEW YORK, March 13. Elements of the Fourth and Fifth Marine Divisions have landed on barren rocks on the eastern side of Iwo Jima in order to knock out Japanese mortar positions which had been lobbing shells at the marines in the Kitamo Point sector.

Lieutenant-General Holland Smith, the marines' commander, narrowly escaped death when a Japanese sniper shot at him and three others who were standing on a rock watching the fighting on northern Iwo Jima. General Smith said the bullet missed him by six inches, and added: "I looked for a hole in my trousers, it was that close."

No appreciable change was made in the front lines on Iwo Jima today, says Admiral Nimitz's communique. The enemy continued to resist attacks with small-arms, machine-gun, and mortar fire.

Mopping-up operations continued in the Third and Fourth Divisions' sectors. One hundred and five caves were sealed up during the day.
