"AUSTERITY" CLOTHING
Although the so-called austerity clothing regulations have been relaxed in a number of respects since they were first introduced as 'a wartime economy measure, certain restrictions still apply. Lately in some quarters there have been suggestions that the remaining restrictions are to be revoked and that complete freedom in manufacture will prevail again. Accords ing to a statement made by the Acting Minister of Supply (Mr. Nash) when he officially opened the annual conference of the New Zealand Retailers' Federation at Nelson recently, however, there is little prospect of any immediate alteration in the existing position.
On that occasion Mr. Nash said that with regard to austerity clothing, in the ordinary way he would be happy to abandon the regulations, because they were not as valuable as many people thought. That did not mean that they were of no value at all. But if the regulations were abandoned people would again begin to think that the war was over, and that was a dangerous delusion. The Germans would be defeated eventually, but they were still fighting. The difficulties of peace would be greater than the difficulties of war.
