CITY SOLICITOR
RETIRING TODAY
The City Solicitor, Mr. John O'Shea, M.A, LL.B., retired today after 40 years' service with the Wellington City Council. He carried on his duties for two years longer than he had originally intended to meet the staff situation created by the war. He will retain the position of legal adviser to the Municipal Association, which he has held since 1929, and may go into private practice, possibly continuing to advise the council. Local registration framed by him has been incorporated in national legislation, and he is now advising the Standards Institute on a standard code of New Zealand by-laws. The affairs of the city have been safe in his hands, owing largely to his deep interest in all their phases, and a remarkable memory which, with his wide knowledge of local legislation,
undoubtedly saved Wellington much unnecessary expense.
A staff presentation will be made to Mr. O'Shea at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Concert Chamber.
Mr. O'Shea came to the Wellington City Council as City Solicitor in 1904. Born in Dunedin, he qualified in 1900 after a distinguished scholastic career. He was dux of Otago Boys' High School in 1893; junior national scholar (1888); senior (1890), and Provincial Scholar (an award now discontinued); senior (Latin) and University Scholar (1897); M.A. (Otago University), with first-class honours (1899); LL.B. (1900). He played for the Otago University first fifteen, represented Otago at Rugby (1898-99), and played senior cricket in Otago and Wellington. He continued to play social cricket till a few years ago.
His brothers have also achieved prominent positions. Mr. Thomas O'Shea is a barrister and solicitor in Dunedin; Mr. A. P. O'Shea is Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Farmers' Union; Mr. M. R. O'Shea, former general secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation, is now coordinating secretary for the Woollen Mill Owners' Association and, like Mr John O'Shea, was a dux of Otaeo Boys' High School.
