PAYING HIS WAY

RECORD OF PEDANTIC

The former northerner Pedantic, who carried off the principal event, the D. J. Evans Memorial Handicap, at the Westland Meeting on Saturday, is now proving a payable proposition. His record this term reads three firsts and three seconds in nine starts, and although his winnings are not large, he has more than paid his way. A five-year-old gelding by Inflation, he is from the Gasbag mare Discourse, who was quite a good winner for the former Foxton trainer F. J. Carmont. The first of Discourse's progeny, a filly by Thomond, raced as Discoursive, but she failed to fulfil expectations, and two later products, Blab and Hikorere, did hot draw attention to themselves. However, Pedantic has definitely improved the family's record, even though his successes have come in rather modest company.

Overdue Win.— Another former North Islander to get on the winning list at Westland was Ruling Moment, a six-year-old gelding by Rulanut from the Merry Moment mare Spare Moment. It was his first win for the season. Two earlier members of the family, Leisure (by Lord Quex) and Rarotonga (by Philamor), were particularly useful, the former as a sprinter and the latter as a hurdler.

Impressive. —Since being taken over by I. Tinsley the Theio gelding Lord Theio has won at each of his four starts. In the Makuri Hack Handicap, six furlongs, at the Pahiatua Meeting, he was saddled with 9.9, yet won with a good deal in hand. It gave him his fifth success and raised his stake winnings to £630. As a result, he will have to do his future racing in open company.

Gone South.— Mr. P. Louis, of Wellington, has placed Note Raid and a yearling colt by Robin Goodfellow from Lady Furst in the hands of A. McAulay at Riccarton. The latter was bought at the Yearling Sales for 700 guineas.

Good Record.—Winner of the Kanieri Hack Handicap at Hokitika, Chellow Dene carried his account further in the Stewards' High weight at Westland on' Saturday, and his record this season reads four firsts and two fourths in his ten outings. He is a four-year-old gelding by Solicitor General from Folk Lore, thus a younger brother to Conquistador, who brought off a surprise win in the Nihotupu Hack Handicap, 11 furlongs, at.Avondale last term. Unplaced.—Without ever looking dangerous, Alchemist ran a fair race to finish eighth in the Makuri Hack Handicap at Woodville. She is a five-year-old mare by Alchemic, thus closely related to Distinguished, who shortly after beating Laughing Lass in-the Junction Plate at Marton in 1934 was sold to an Australian owner. She won the Three- and Four-year-old Handicap, seven furlongs, at City Tatt's, Sydney, and the Clyde. Handicap, seven furlongs, at Rosehill, but died after racing once in the following, season.

Looked Burly.—Despite being very burly in appearance, Killeymoon showed ar brilliant turn of speed to carry the open sprinters along in the Eketahuna Handicap at the Pahiatua Meeting, it being not till after entering the straight that she was collared. It was her first outing for a considerable time, and further improvement can be expected;

For Hawera.—ln the first division of the maiden event at Woodville last Saturday, Patta Fe made a bold bid to win, but weakened - just short of the post and was beaten by Gay Corrie, with Tribal Night getting up to dead-heat with her for second. Although unfashionably bred, Patta Fe should make a bold showing in the First Trial Stakes at Hawera.

Going: North.—Hopes are entertained that it will be possible to send Duplicity north, for the Easter Meeting at Ellerslie. The Solicitor GeneralClink filly is topweight with 9.3 in the Juvenile Handicap at Hawera on Saturday, and if arrangements can be completed she will go on by boat from New Plymouth.

I ' Delayed.—Northern reports mention I that Sweet Biscuit is being kept up to her work and to be showing all her former brilliance. She has had a lean innings this term, and in view of her breeding—she is by Broiefort from Spearform, the dam of Classform—it is surprising that she has not been tried over a middle distance. To date she has been restricted to sprinting. Taranaki Circuit.—With racing on three successive Saturdays in Taranaki many trainers from afield are ' hopeful of getting their charges to Hawera for Saturday, and included among the prospective visitors and horses from Hawke's Bay and Awapuni. The Taranaki gathering is set down for March 10, with the combined gathering at Stratford a week later.

From Good Mare.—During her active career the Musketoon mare Rona Bay was particularly useful, but the only two of her produce to race as yet have still to win. Cinna Bay, the second member of the family, is owned and trained at Hastings, but she was not prominent in her outing at the Pahiatua Meeting.

Great Family.—Favourite for the first division of the maiden event at Woodville on Saturday, Bianette ran unplaced. A four-year-old mare by Lang Bian, she is from Lucinette, a daughter by Martian of the New Zealand Cup winner Lady Lucy. An older member of the family, Flammarion (by Arausio), won. good races, and as Bianette has had little racing experience she should improve.
