FUN SESSION
PATRIOTIC ENTERTAINMENT
Something unusual in the way of entertainment was provided in the Wellington Town Hall last night when Fun Session Number 1 was inaugurated under the direction of the Wellington Patriotic Fund Board. A large audience enjoyed the programme, which was provided by well-known radio personalities and other performers.
The proceedings were opened by the board's honorary secretary, Mr. Vincent Ward, M.L.C, who introduced the Mayoress, Mrs. Appleton. The importance of tlie board's work, particularly in the dispatch of parcels to prisoners of war, was emphasised by the Mayoress, who declared that funds were urgently required If Wellington's financial quota was to be obtained. "Give while you laugh," said Mrs. Appleton, "because you could not contribute to a more worthy cause." Such a form of "painless extraction,' she added, would appeal to Wellingtonians. ,
Guy Hardenburg, who appeared In uniform, aud Maurice Hawken, as comperes, set the ball rolling merrily, and were also in charge of an amusing jack pot. Joan Akers sang the session's theme song. Little Leigh Brewer, as usual, scored an instantaneous success with her songs, and showed considerable versatility for such a youthful performer. Hazel Martin's ballet danced, and were followed by a burlesque party who evoked much laughter by their terpsichorean efforts with Mendelssohn's "Spring Song."
A basketball competition, In which several teams featured, was another amusing item. Further, there'were competitions for boys and girls, prizes for lucky seats, and a variety of raffles. The Inaugural session more than maintained the claim that there would be "laughter and fun for everyone." Mr, George Miller made a capable director.
