AUSTRALIAN SHIPS
LINGAYEN GULF ACTION

SYDNEY, February 5. Men of H.M.A.S. Australia did not leave their guns for five days in the action in which they supported the American landing at Lingayen Gulf Luzon Island, last month. The cruiser was hit five times and heavily damaged. In the first three days of the action the Japanese made 67 raids upon her.
The Australian cruiser Shropshire and the destroyers Warramunga and Arunta were engaged as heavily as the Australia. Eleyen weeks earlier the Australia was hit during the landing on Leyte 19 men being killed and 54 wounded. Admiral Fraser, commander of the British Pacific Fleet, who observed the Lingayen Gulf action from the bridge of an American battleship, said: I have had an opportunity of f?™ n? at rst han£ the performance of H.M.A. ships, and I am proud of the Royal Australian Navy. Their work is first class."
A member of the Australian War Cabinet Mr. P. C. Spender, speaking in San Francisco, said that Australia's naval losses in comparison with her population were probably the heaviest of all the Allies.
