SHAKESPEARE SEASON.
It Is so many years since a Shakespearean company has toured New Zealand , that the coming visit of the players of the Canterbury University College Drama Society, who" will present "Hamlet" In modern dress and "Othello," will provide many of the younger generation with their first opportunity of seeing and hearing a living presentation of the work of the greatest of all dramatists. Opening at the Wellington Concert- Chamber -on January 29, Miss Ngaio Marsh's production of "Hamlet" will reveal guards, in present-day battledress, keeping watch at Kronberg Castle; a Hamlet whose princely wardrobe includes a modern overcoat and down-turned felt hat; ladies of the court wearing evening frocks cut on the approved lines of our times. This departure, though new to New Zealand audiences, follows in the wake of Continental experiments of recent years. The tour, under the direction of Mr. D. D. O'Connor, was undertaken as the result of the popular success of "Hamlet" in Christchurch, where the play has been twice revived for the total run of 15 nights. Booking for both plays opens at the D.I.C. on January 24.
