DIRECT AIR SERVICE

BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA

CANBERRA, January 16. A direct air service between Britain and Australia with converted Lancaster bombers is due to start on February 1. From one trip weekly the service will be built up gradually into a daily service. It will be operated jointly by the Australian and British Governments, with Australian crews taking over the planes from the British crews at Karachi, India.

Announcing this, the Acting Prime Minister (Mr. F. M. Forde) said the commencement of the new service on February 1 was contingent upon sufficient aircraft being available. At first the new service will be supplementary to the present Indian Ocean service which arrives at and departs from Perth every three days. This service is operated jointly by the British Overseas Airways Corporation and Qantas Empire Airways, using Liberators and Catalinas.

The Commonwealth will meet the cost of the ground organisation within Australia for the new service, while the British Government will meet the costs entailed in all other countries en route.

The Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr. Jones), to whom this message was referred, said this afternoon that no advice had yet been received as to whether the service would be extended to New Zealand.
