ARMY STORES

SOLDIERS SENTENCED FOR THEFT

PARIS, January 9,

Prison sentences of from 45 to 50 years were imposed on four American soldiers —a staff sergeant and three privates—for the theft and sale of cigarettes and other American Government property. All four were dishonourably discharged from the United States army, forfeiting all pay and allowances. All are under 30 years of age, and they had tears in their eyes as they heard the sentences.

Lieutenant H. W. Klein, who is attached to the Chief Quartermaster's Office in Paris, said that on September 15 last there were 34,000,000 cigarettes on hand. The stock at the end of October was down to 86,000. An American detective caught a soldier and railway workers in possession of staggering amounts of money.

A total of 182 enlisted men and two officers are to be tried on similar charges. Huge quantities of cigarettes, besides chocolate, razor blades, and soap, are alleged to be involved.
