YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENT
GERMAN FLEET BROKEN Rec. 11 a.m. RUGBY, December 29. An official review of the operations i by the British Navy and Air Force in 1944 is published today. The naval section says that as 19M: ends the interest in the war, at sea moves from the West to the vast areas of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, virhere Britain is assembling two mighty fleets to .fight beside her American allies against the Japanese. » They will operate in whatever part of the Pacific the strategic situation dictates. This great' regrouping of Britain's sea power is. the culmination of a year of achievements outstanding in the history of the Royal Navy. During' 1944 the -German Navy, in effect, ceased to exist as a major fighting force, and the greatest amphibious opera-tion-ever attempted-.-was successfully accomplished with the landings- of powerful Allied-armies on the shores of Normandy. , ■ . -' ' .■••:' i U-BOATS BEATEN. j In the Battle of the Atlantic the U--boat menace has been so greatly reduced that Allied v convoys carrying troops and vital war supplies now I make the passage, with minimum loss. ! The offensive power of .the Fleet Air | Arm has so increased that it is now capable of conducting simultaneous operations in ; great strength in all theatres of the sea war. Despite-our extensive commitments, hot a single battleship or aircraft-carrier has been lost. :-:■■.:,. ; • ■■::::■■■ ■■-. -..-. .The year 1944 has been memorable for the battles to liberate Europe, and it has been for the R.A.F.- a year of operations of far greater, scope-arid more massive in proportion than at any other time in the history of air warfare.
