HOLIDAY CARNIVAL
CHOPPING EVENTS
Large attendances followed the good weather which favoured tho opening of the holiday carnival of the Wellington South R.S.A. oil Saturday afternoon. and their continuance will mean a highly successful, season. The president of the Wellington K.S.A. (MajorGeneral W.. H. Cunningham) and the Mayor (Mr. Appleton) were associated in the official opening ceremony, and each expressed his good" wishes for a project which was providing a much-needed outdoor entertainment over the holiday period and promised to be of considerable assistance to a newly-formed branch of the association. One of the most entertaining schedules on the sports programme comprised two chopping events to whet the public appetite for the special axemen's carnival which will occupy i a whole day later In the carnival. The first was practically a family event, with the Pretty family filling the first three places. Third Avas the ex-world champion, Dave Pretty, who is now 68 years old; his 17-year-old' son, R. Pretty, cf Silverstream, was second, and a nephew, Constable T. Pretty, won the chop. The second chop was won by Constable G. Campbell, with R. Pretty second and T. Pretty third. Dave Pretty did not compete. At night there was a good stage show of eight individual artists, with Assheton Harbord as producer and compere. Such entertainment by a wide range of artists will be a feature of the remaining nights of the carnival. This afternoon there will be a boxing tournament, with Wellington's leading amateurs competing. Tomorrow afternoon a baby show will he a high light. In addition there is a wide range of side-shows, novelty features, and other forms of entertainment for people of all ages.
