YEAR'S ACHIEVEMENTS
In" his address at the breaking-up ceremony at St. Patrick's .College, Silverstream, the Rector, the Rev. Father Evans, spoke of the debt owed to the Very Rev. Father J. J. Kennedy, S.M., M.A., who had filled the office of rector at Silverstream for six years with conspicuous success, and was connected with the college in Wellington. His transfer to Australia was a loss to the college. Discussing the successes of pupils during the year, he said that Desmond Stuart Smith, Patea, had been selected for a cadetship at Duntroon Military College, N.S.W. He referred ,to the- ten decorations won by old boys for gallantry during the year. Four boys had won university bursaries; fifteen were awarded higher leaving certificates; 26 boys passed the university entrance examination; 27 obtained a pass in the school certificate examination, four a partial pass; and 41 boys passed the Public Service entrance examination. The .school roll had reached a total of 271 boys, 236 in the boarding school and 35 day boys. If. as appeared likely, numbers increased,, it might be necessary to provide additional accommodation.
Awards were:—College scholarship, William Roche, Westport; Kennedy Scholarship, Robert Scott, Napier; Emily Johnston Scientific Scholarship, A. M. Minett, Lower Hutt; Dux of the school (Gilbert Memorial Medal), T. J. Hodgins; good conduct (Redwood Memorial Medal), T. J. Hodgins; diligence (Kennedy Memorial Medal), B. D. J. Lynch; Christian doctrine (Ryan Memorial). T. J. Hodgins.
