FOUR MEN SENTENCED

AIR FORCE STATION THEFTS

P.A., AUCKLAND, This Day. "In this instance the Court has the painful duty of having to send to gaol men who have served their country," said Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court today, when sentencing Bernard Whiting, 45; Thomas Melville Petfy, 29; John Raymond Petry, 24; and Arthur Davies, 29, for thefts of motor tyres and other equipment from the Ardmore Air Force Station,

All the accused were members of the ground staff.

Counsel said that Whiting served in the last war and the other three had all been overseas in this war and were due to go away again. He said that the thefts were committed' when the men were under the influence of liquor.

Describing the men's action as disgraceful in that they robbed and crippled the force Jus Honour sentenced Whiting and Thomas Petry to twelve months' imprisonment, and Davies and the younger Petry to twelve months' and nine months' reformative detention respectively.
