BUILDINGS DAMAGED
VANDALISM AT AUCKLAND '
O.C. AUCKLAND, This Day. Mischief which has been committed by vandals at a former United States Navy. communications station at Mount Roskill, Auckland, has made two large buildings erected only a few years ago look as if they have just managed to survive* a hurricane. Exterior wall panels have been holed or ripped iri many places, and interior linings and fittings have been similarly treated.
Three buildings, together with fencing material and hardwood masts, are at present being offered for sale by tender by the War Assets Realisation Board, which refers to the buildings as being damaged. One is a small shed which has two sides undamaged, one is a building of about 9ft by 60ft, and the other, of two rooms, is about 42ft by 60ft.
The first of these larger buildings has gaping holes in both exterior and interior walls, the windows and sashes are smashed, concrete tubs lie in pieces on the floor, and many fittings have been damaged or broken. The other building has almost every exterior panel torn in one or many places, the framework has been smashed in several parts, and the lining has been pulled off most of the interior.
So far»as can be seen, little attempt has been made to remove fittings. The vandals contented themselves with breaking everything they could reach. Access was apparently gained by cutting the high barbedwire fence which surrounds the station.
